Subsidy for Trainees and Apprentices & Payroll Tax Reductions- NSW Government Economic Stimulus

The NSW State Government Premier, Gladys Berejikian, announced in March 2020 that the NSW State Government will assist eligible employers through the tough economic slow down caused by COVID-19 pandemic. One of the measures offered to business is that if they employee trainees or apprentices they will be able to claim 50% of their trainee and apprentices wages paid from 1 Jan 2020 to 30 September 2020 and capped up to $21,000 per eligible trainee and/or apprentice. Eligibility for the business depends upon employing less than 20 full time staff and the employee must have been in training as of 1 March 2020. The employer can gain access to the subsidy after being assessed by a an approved Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider .

For larger employers that may also be paying NSW Payroll Tax, the Premier has stated that the payroll tax for the months of April, May and June 2020 will be waived and that the payroll tax threshold will be lifted to $1M from 1/7/2020 (brought forward one year from 1/7/2021).
